Scout food drive set

Wilkes Boy Scouts will be collecting food for the needy next month. The food drive, which will be sponsored The Record and Lowes Foods, is an effort by local scouts to stock the cupboards at Wilkes Cares’ Food Bank. Joe Love, Wilkes District chairman for the Boy Scouts of America, said the food drive is a little different than in previous years. “This year, the Old Hickory Council decided to do another project. We wanted to continue doing the food drive in our district,” Love said. “Wilkes Cares really depends on it to stock its Food Bank.”

The food drive will begin on Feb. 1 Then, scouts will drop off plastic food bags in various Wilkes neighborhoods. Information will be included with the bags to inform residents about the program and ask them to leave non-perishable packaged foods and canned goods in the bags on their porches. The food will be collected on the morning of Feb. 8. The program has been successful in the past, Love said. “Usually we collect enough food to fill the cupboards for a while,” he said. “Wilkes scouts just want to be sure that Wilkes County is taken care of.”
