Polling is next Tuesday
School board race,
primaries set
Voters will
select three members of the Wilkes County Board of Education and help narrow
fields in several other races next Tuesday.
Three seats are
available on the board of education. In that non-partisan race, incumbents
Randall Holbrook and Kirk Walker will face challengers Lyn Ashley, Julie Baird,
Douglas Brown, Keith Erwin Deveraux and Judith Walsh.
Five Republican
candidates will vie for three spots in the Wilkes County Commissioner’s
election in November. The candidates include incumbents Jerry Sidden and
Charles Sink will face challengers Fay Byrd, Keith Elmore and Robert Glen.
In the race for
94th N.C. House District GOP challenger David Sprinkle will contest
incumbent Tracy Walker.
Bonnie Bentley
Martin and Ricky Anderson will challenge incumbent Republican Rick Woodruff in
the primary for Wilkes Register of Deeds.
In the 5th
U.S. Congressional District, a Democratic primary will see Jim Harrell, Jr.,
Roger Kirkman and Andrew Winfrey vie for the top vote.
Eight
candidates will square off in the Republican primary for the 5th
U.S. Congressional District. Those candidates who hope to fill the seat of
Richard Burr (who is running for U.S. Senate) are Ed Broyhill, Joe Byrd of
Wilkes, Virginia Foxx, Jay Helvey, Edward Powell, Vernon Robinson, Nathan Tabor
and David Vanhoy.
Burr will face
GOP opponents John Ross Hendrix and Albert Lee Wiley, Jr. in Republican primary
for U.S. Senate.
Both Republican
and Democrat primaries will be settled in the state’s gubernatorial race.
Incumbent
Democrat Gov. Mike Easley is being challenged by Rickey Kipfer. GOP candidates
Patrick Ballantine, Dan Barrett, Bill Cobey, George Little, Fern Shubert and
Richard Vinroot will also compete.
Polls open at
6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
