Mrs. Stella Cothern Hooper, age 78, passed away Tuesday, June 13

Mrs. Stella Cothern Hooper, age 78, of Johnson Ridge Road, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at Elkin HealthCare.  Mrs. Hooper was born August, 22, 1927 in Surry County to Paul & Lura Collins. 

Mrs. Hooper was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was retired from the Wilkes County Library.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Cothern and her second husband Woodrow Hooper; a twin sister, Ella Money; two brothers, Ralph Collins and Albert Collins. 

Survivors include:  a stepson, Ron Hooper and wife Trish of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Sheila Hinson and husband Frank of State Road; two brothers, Joe Collins and wife Alma of Elkin, Romie Collins and wife Faye of Archdale; a sister, Maxine Cranfield of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Collins of Ronda; four step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

 Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church by Rev. Joel Blevins.  Burial will follow in at Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church. 

 In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Macedonia Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Nora Alice Billings Dillard, age 84, died Monday, June 12

Mrs. Nora Alice Billings Dillard, age 84, of Dehart Church Road, North Wilkesboro, widow of William Claude Dillard, died Monday, June 12, 2006 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2006 at Haymeadow Baptist Church with the Rev. John T. Vannoy, III and Elder Berch Handy officiating. 

Mrs. Dillard was born October 20, 1921 in Wilkes County to Edgar and Bertha Brown Billings.  She retired from Thom McCann. 

She is survived by: one brother, Elmore Billings of North Wilkesboro and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, 1907 West Park Drive, North Wilkesboro. NC 28659.

 

 

Mr. Verlie Junior Church, age 61, died Sunday, June 11

Mr. Verlie Junior Church, age 61, of Amelia Drive, Wilkesboro died Sunday, June 11, 2006.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2:00 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Hwy 16N with the Rev. Brian Miller and the Rev. Dean Rector officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Church was born in Wilkes County, June 9, 1945, to Verlie L and Mary Elizabeth Bishop Church.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Church is survived by his wife, Viola Laws Church of the home, one son, Clayton Junior Church of Wilkesboro, two sisters, Shirley Wagoner of McGrady and Rosie Church Spears of Hays, and one brother, Billy Joe Church of Ronda.

The family will receive at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Hwy 16N from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service.

Mrs. Nora Evelyn Rash Bishop, age 88, died Sunday, June 11

Mrs. Nora Evelyn Rash Bishop, age 88, widow of Edward Clay Bishop of Peace Street, North Wilkesboro, died Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Britthaven of Wilkesboro.  Mrs. Bishop was born August 18, 1917 in Wilkes County to John Bynum and Bessie Evelyn Rash.  She was preceded in death by a brother James H. Rash.

Surviving are two sons, James Edward Bishop and John William Bishop, both of North Wilkesboro; three daughters, Madge Elizabeth Lineberry and Sylvia Diane Logan both of North Wilkesboro, Mary Elaine Frazier of Moravian Falls; one sister, Madeline Foster of Millers Creek; eighteen grandchildren; twenty two great grandchildren; 2 great great granddaughters.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 o'clock Friday, June 16 at the Wesley Outreach Center Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Gwyn officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2200 Lake Blvd., Atlanta, Georgia 30319.

 

Mrs. Vertie Mathis Anderson, age 86, died Saturday, June 10

Mrs. Vertie Mathis Anderson, better known as "Doane", age 86, of Jarvis Mountain Road, Roaring River, widow of Charles Henry Anderson died Saturday, June 10, 2006 at her home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Cranberry Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Jackson and

Mr. Joey Caudill officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery. 

Mrs. Anderson was born in Wilkes County, June 1, 1920, to Myrth and Bertha M. Mathis.  She was a member of Cranberry Baptist Church.  She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who was loved and cherished by her family.  Mrs. Anderson was an avid quilter and for many years she designed and quilted the Grand Marshall's quilt for the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by three sisters, Grace Riling, Gertie Roberts, and Mary Wheeler; two brothers, Jarvie Mathis and Archie Mathis.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by three daughters, Glenda Pardue and husband, Johnny of Roaring River, Wanda Campbell and husband, Don of Statesville, Jan Caudill and husband, Jim of Millers Creek,

Two sons, Charles Dean Anderson and wife, Nina of Calabash, David Anderson and wife, Becky of Mooresville, 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren

Mrs. Curtie Lowe McCann, age 87, died Wednesday, June 7

Mrs. Curtie Lowe McCann, age 87, of Shattalon Drive, Winston Salem, widow of Clyde McCann died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Springwood Care Center in Winston Salem.

A graveside service was held Saturday, June 10, at 11:00 at Pleasant Home Baptist Church Cemetery in the Lomax Community with Dr. Monroe Huffman officiating.

Mrs. McCann was born in Carroll County, VA, October 4, 1918, to Fred and Mala Moore Lowe.  She was a member of White Plains Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. McCann is preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda Gale Wiles; two sons, Talmadge Russell McCann and Hershel Wade McCann.  Mrs. McCann is survived by two daughters, Grace Dean Brewer of King, Hattie Ruth Flynn of Winston Salem, one son, Grant McCann of Lexington, 20 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.

Mrs. Cleo Ledford Bowlin, age 88, died Friday, June 9

Mrs. Cleo Ledford Bowlin, age 88, of Shew Ridge Mission Road, Wilkesboro, widow of Freddie Arnold Bowlin died Friday, June 9, 2006

Funeral services were held Monday, June 12, at 2:00 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Fred Wells Brason, II officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Bowlin was born in Clay Co., GA, January 6, 1918, to Samuel and Mattie Worley Ledford. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bowlin was preceded in death by one son, Jack Ledford.

Mrs. Bowlin is survived by eight daughters, Sharon Shew and husband, Robert of North Wilkesboro, Rebecca Lovette of Millers Creek,  Mary Shew and husband, William of North Wilkesboro,                          Suzanne Anderson of Wilkesboro, Jane Chambers of North Wilkesboro,  JoAnn Burton and husband, Gray of Hamptonville, Wilma Sue Caudill and husband Dennis of North Wilkesboro, Linda Barlow and husband, Bobby of Crestview, FL, four sons, Jimmy Bowlin and wife, Patricia of Hays, James Bowlin and wife, Janice of North Wilkesboro, Johnny Bowlin and wife, Teresa of Wilkesboro, Bud Bowlin and wife, Shirley of Wilkesboro, one sister, Eva Nelle Patterson of Hays, one brother, Hayes Ledford of Hays, 39 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; 19 great, and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Flossie Mae Hemric, age 80, passed away Sunday June 10

Mrs. Flossie Mae Hemric, age 80 of NC Hwy 268 passed away Sunday June 10, 2006 at her residence. Mrs. Hemric was born September 1, 1925 in Surry County to Sim Wesley and Lucy Davis Hemmings.  Mrs. Hemric was retired from Burlington Industries of Ronda and was a member of New Home Church of Christ in Dobson.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Hemric was preceded in death by husbands Ralph Victor Draughn and Dwight Eller Hemric, two sisters Fairy Queen Hemmings and Vera Hemmings Mabe, and one brother John Wesley Hemmings.

Survivors include; sister in-law Annie Lee Hemmings of Dobson, nieces; Elaine Hemmings Lawson and husband Tony, Misti Hemmings Fain and husband Chris, Nephews Jonny Lee Hemmings and Tony Mabe all of Dobson. Also, nieces Vicki Norman and husband Joe of Jamestown, NC., Joy Freeman and husband Felix of Roanoke, Va., Terri Cocherham and husband Ronnie Lisha High and husband Greg all of Dobson, Lorrie Finch and Husband Charles of Archdale, NC., Shirley Cothern and husband Don of Winston Salem, Amy Lilley and husband Stephen of Summerfield, Gwen Harris and husband Walter of Grafton Va., and Anita Johnston of Matthews, and Linda Henderson and husband Jim of Harrisburg, NC.  Nephews Robert Draughn of Dobson, Alton Bledsoe and wife Adele of Mt. Airy, Dennis Bledsoe and wife Patty of Dobson, Keith Draughn and wife Sara Jane and Kenneth Draughn all of Burlington.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hemric were held June 13 at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel and were conducted by the Rev. Bobby Prevette.  Burial followed at New Hope Church of Christ.

Mrs. Mary Higgins Hendrix, age 72, died Thursday, June 8

Mrs. Mary Higgins Hendrix, better known as "Peggy" age 72, wife of Harley Hendrix, of Robinhood Road, North Wilkesboro died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 11, at 2:00 at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Tim Pruitt officiating.  Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hendrix was born in Wilkes County, November 27, 1933, to Boyd T. and Eula Marie Wiles Higgins.  She was an active member of Victory Baptist Church where she was the organist.  Mrs. Hendrix taught in the Wilkes County School System for 16 years.  She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hendrix was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Higgins.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hendrix is survived by one daughter, Lisa Pruitt and husband, Tim of North Wilkesboro, one sister, Glenna Joines of South Bend, Indiana, one brother, Boyd Anthony "Tony" Higgins and wife, Lynda of North Wilkesboro, and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Catherine Nevil Porter, Age 76, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006

Mrs. Catherine Nevil Porter, Age 76, widow of Ray Porter of College Street, Wilkesboro, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.  Mrs. Porter was born October 5, 1929 in Chatham County, Georgia to Annie Mae Crapps Sechrist.

Surviving are one son, Donnie Porter of Mt. Airy; one daughter, Shelia Porter and husband Jim McClure of Wilkesboro; three brothers, Ronald Sechrist, Richard Sechrist, Chalmous Sechrist, all of Thomasville; three stepsons, Billy Ray Porter, Sr., T. R. Porter, both of North Wilkesboro, Douglas Porter of Carollton, Ga., seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.  

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 11, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Ted Combs officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.

Miss Margaret Carol Sheets, age 58, passed away Wednesday, June 7

Miss Margaret Carol Sheets, age 58 of Boone Trail, North Wilkesboro passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.  Miss Sheets was born November 27, 1947 in Ashe County to Lillard Vaughn and Maurine Miller Sheets. 

Surviving are her mother, Maurine Miller Sheets of North Wilkesboro, two brothers, Paul Sheets and wife, Carol of Baltimore, MD, Wayne Sheets and wife, Daphene of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Martha Mae Whittington of North Wilkesboro.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev.

Steve Faw and the Rev. Julius Blevins officiating.  Burial was in the Peak Creek Cemetery in Laurel Springs.

Mr. James Albert Bradley, 93, passed away, Tuesday, June 6

Mr. James Albert Bradley, 93, of 168 Hunter Road, North Wilkesboro, passed away, Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Avante Rehab and Nursing Care in Wilkesboro, N.C.

Mr. Bradley was born January 26, 1913 in Toronto, Canada and was the son of the late Charles Richard Bradley and Jessie Kastie Bradley.  MR. Bradley attended Toronto public schools and was a sales manager for Jones West Ford in Sparks, NV and a security site manager for Lowe's in Wilkesboro, NC.  He was a member of the Rameses Shiners Club in Toronto, Canada and Lifeline Christian Church in North Wilkesboro.  He enjoyed and touched many people's lift by playing the fiddle.

On April 22, 1978, Mr. Bradley married the late Verta Mae Burchett Bradley, who passed away in 1997.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bradley was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Isabell Bradley Johnson and her husband, Tom Johnson of Toronto and two brothers, Tom Bradley and Allan Bradley, also from Toronto.

Graveside funeral services were held June 9, 2006 at Scenic Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Moravian Falls with the Rev. Bobby Brown officiating.  Interment followed in the cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lifeline Christian Church in N. Wilkesboro, NC.

Mr. Conrad Odell Prevette, age 84, died Wednesday, June 7

Mr. Conrad Odell Prevette, Age 84 of Cabin Creek Road, Hays, died, Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin.  Mr. Prevette was born September 2, 1921 in Wilkes County to Grant and Ella Brown Prevette.  He was an Army Veteran of World War II.

Surviving are four sons, Jerry Prevette of Sun Valley, Arizona, Dennis Prevette, Michael Prevette, Dwight Prevette, all of Hays, one daughter, Peggy Urick of Hays, twenty-two grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. 

Graveside services with Military Rites by V F W Post 1142 were held Friday at Christian Home Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ivan Dameron and the Rev. Danny Dillard officiating. Mr. Willie Delton Ayers, age 83, Tuesday, June 6

 

Mr. Willie Delton Ayers, age 83 of Ayers Road, Ferguson died, Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Ayers was born October 25, 1922 in Wilkes County to Mary Ayers Taylor.  He was a member of Dunkirk United Methodist Church, a life long member of the Republican Party and served as chairman of the Mt. Pleasant Precinct for over thirty years.

Surviving are his wife, Laura Estelle West Ayers of the home, two sons, Stephen Ayers and wife, Ann, Dwaine Ayers and wife, Wanda , all of Ferguson; three daughter, Sue Hamby and husband Roger, Sandra Pennell and husband, Randy, all of Ferguson LaVerne Myers and husband, Danny,  of Ronda; three sisters, Hazel Setzer, Edith Watson, both of Lenoir, Helen Marsh of North Wilkesboro, seven grandchildren, Kim Hamby, Pam Daniels, Junior Ayers, Heather Ayers, Melody Baker, Bill Hamby, Shane Myers; six great grandchildren, Brian Hamby, Jessica Howell, Ethan Hamby, Melissa Baker, Paige Baker, Adam Key, and one great great grandchild, William Howell.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and Rev.. Louella Marley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Miller Funeral Homes was in charge of the arrangements.
