Betty Miller Jordan, age 78,
of Somers Road, Hamptonville
died Monday, January 12, 2009 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
A
graveside service will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m., January 15, 2009 at Calvary Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery with Mr. Rodney
Buff officiating. The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant
Funeral Home Thursday from 12 until 1 prior to the service.
Mrs.
Jordan was born July 18,
1930 in Ashe County to Charlie and
Mollie Wyatt Miller.
Her
husband, James Jordan preceded her in death.
She
is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Carole Driscoll Hersey, age 86, died Monday,
January 12
Mrs.
Mary Carole Driscoll Hersey, age 86, widow of Paul Freeland Hersey, of High Point, formerly of Wilkes County, died Monday,
January 12, 2009 at Pennybyrn at Maryfield. Mrs. Hersey was born November 19,
1923 in Essex County, Massachusetts to
Bartholomew and Marion Ryan Driscoll. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.
Surviving are three sons, P.
Michael Hersey and wife Beverly of North Wilkesboro, Bart Hersey
and wife Jan of Wilton, Maine, John Hersey of Fountain Hills,
Arizona; and one daughter, Carole Hersey-Bergeron of East Haddam,
Connecticut.
Memorial services will be private.
Mr. C. A. Burchette, Jr., age 75, died Monday, January 12
Mr.
C. A. Burchette, Jr., age 75, of S. Lomax Road, Ronda died
Monday, January 12, 2009 at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern.
Funeral
services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 15, at Macedonia Baptist
Church with the Rev. Mike Smith, Rev. Kenneth Jordan, and Mr. Quincy Myers
officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial
will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive at
Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday night.
Mr.
Burchette was born in Wilkes County, December 6, 1933,
to Clyde Augustus Burchette, Sr. and Nania Crater Burchette. He was a
member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he served as
a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and held many other offices at the
church. Mr. Burchette was a sergeant in the US
Army for two years and was
stationed in Germany
during the Korean War. Mr. Burchette was the owner and president of
Associated Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.
Mr.
Burchette is survived by his wife, Maye Oliver Burchette of the home; two sons,
David Burchette and wife, Janice and Tim Burchette and wife, Barbara all of
Ronda; one sister, Pauline B. Jones and husband, Lt. Col. James W. Jones of
Pinnacle; five grandchildren, Lauren Burchette, Abby Burchette both of Ronda,
Chris Alexander of Roaring River, Sally Razack of Huntersville, and Jesse
Alexander of Ronda.

Mr.
William Thomas Cothern, age 69, of Otis Brown Drive, North
Wilkesboro died Monday, January 12, 2009 at Villages of Wilkes Skilled Care.
Funeral
services will be held Wednesday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant
Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Brown officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.
Mr.
Cothern was born in Wilkes County, April 18, 1939, to
Thomas and Pearl Grimes Cothern. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
In addition
to his parents, Mr. Cothern was preceded in death by a son, James Lloyd
Cothern, a sister, Emma Woodie; and a brother, J. D. Cothern.
Mr.
Cothern is survived by his wife, Carol Dene Shew Cothern of the home; one
daughter, Melissa A. Cothern of the home; one son, John T. Cothern of the home;
two brothers, Junior Cothern of Ronda and Harold Cothern of North Wilkesboro;
two step sisters, Helen Dowell of Roaring River and Wanda Spicer of Ronda; two
step brothers, James Morrison of North Wilkesboro and Rex Morrison.

Mr.
Crabb was born April 11, 1972 in Surry County. He was a
member of Crossfire United Methodist Church.
He
is survived by: his wife, Kimberly Frachey Crabb of Millers Creek; his
parents, Royal and Shirley Wiles of Traphill; two sisters,
Shirley Denise Wiles and Chuck Johnson of Hamptonville, Wendy Dawn Lundy and

Julius S. Pardue, Jr., better known as J. S., age 79, of W. O. Blackburn Road,
Roaring River died Saturday, January 10, 2009.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Antioch Baptist Church at Roaring River with Rev. Ken Pardue
and Rev. Wesley Nelson officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Clingman.
Mr.
Pardue was born June 12, 1929 in Wilkes County to Julius and Drusey
Bell Wiles Pardue, Sr. Before retiring, he worked for Buster Brown and
was a member of Oak Forest Baptist Church.
A
daughter, Margie Lee Wright; six sisters, Syble Cheek, Minnie Eller, Myrtle
Harris, Gertie Lee Luffman, Emmie Couch, Helen Minton; two brothers, Wilson
Pardue and Archie Pardue preceded him in death.
He
is survived by: his wife, Mary Elizabeth Miller Pardue of the home; two
daughters, Karen Wooten of Hickory, Diane Baldwin of Roaring River; one son,
Julius Pardue, III of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Kate Eller of Columbus, OH;
one brother, Bill Pardue of Pleasant Hill of Elkin; grandchildren, David, Mark,
Shane, Benji, Melissa, John, Leigh Ann, Kathy, Michael, Dustin, Sophia;
great-grandchildren, Justin, Josh, Genesis, Ryan, Kayla, Kathlyn, Kember,
Logan, Jacob, Joe and Nathan.

Mr.
Thomas Paul Szekely, age 51, of Allison Lane, North
Wilkesboro, died Friday, January 9, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Szekely was
born May 22, 1957 in Warren, Ohio to James and Erma White
Szekely Sr. He was a US Navy Veteran. Mr. Szekely was preceded in death by his
parents, four infant siblings, and a brother, James Szekely Jr.
Surviving are one son, Nicholas Szekely of North
Wilkesboro; two daughters, Stacie Szekely, Kristyna Szekely both of North
Wilkesboro; three brothers, Russell Szekely of Wilkesboro, Richard Szekely of
Rayne, Louisiana, Julius Szekely of Crowley, Louisiana; three sisters, Janet
Johnson of Wilkesboro, Linda Burrell of Panama City, Florida, Debbie Long of
Masolin, Ohio; one grandson, Nicholas Szekely Jr. and two step grandchildren,
Michael Stanley, Brandon Stanley; fifteen nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 13,
2009 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dean Rector and the Rev. Tim Church
officiating. Burial with military rites by VFW Post 1142 followed in Sheets Family Cemetery in Laurel Springs. In lieu of

Mrs. Debbie Jean Roberts, age 48, died Friday, January 9
Mrs.
Debbie Jean Roberts, age 48, wife of Dale Roberts, of Warsaw, Indiana, formerly of Wilkes County, died Friday,
January 9, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Roberts was born October 28, 1960 in Wilkes County to Shirley Vannoy.
Surviving are her husband of the home; two sons,
Timothy Cockerham of Warsaw, Indiana, David Cockerham of Winston Salem;
her mother, Shirley Vannoy of North Wilkesboro; two step children, Elizabeth
Roberts of Warsaw, Indiana, Dale S. Roberts of Winston Salem; two brothers,
John Vannoy Jr., Christopher Vannoy both of North Wilkesboro; and two
grandchildren, Marissa Roberts, Page Roberts both of Yadkinville.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 15,
2009 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Pastor Mark Barlow officiating.
Burial followed in Gordon Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers will be
accepted.

Barbara Jean Younce, age 56, of Suncrest Orchard Road, North
Wilkesboro, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Ms. Younce was born
May 26, 1952 in Johnson County, Tennessee to Willie Ellis
and Gertie Ethel Fletcher Younce. She was a member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. Ms. Younce was
preceded in death by a brother, James Dallas Younce and a sister, Ella Mae
Curtis.
Surviving are five brothers, Carroll Younce
and wife Mitzi of State Road, Charles Junior Younce and wife Helen of
Wilkesboro, Billy Ray Younce, Bobby Joe Younce both of Millers Creek,
Kenneth Younce of Moravian Falls; five sisters, Dorothy Mason and husband A.J.
of Wilkesboro, Thelma Malone and husband Clarence of Union Grove, Wilma Gay and
husband Gene of Port Huron, Michigan, Joyce Barr of Conover, Sue Smithey and
husband Johnny of Wilkesboro.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 13,
2009 at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Pastor Philip E. Moore officiating.

Mayse.
She

sons, William Hillery Gilreath, Jr. of North Wilkesboro, Philip Gilreath of St.
Cloud, FL, Scott Gilreath and wife, Debra of Wilkesboro; one sister, Genene

Greene officiating.
Mrs.
Walsh was born November 16, 1925 in Wilkes County to Fred and Grace
Smithey Phillips. She was a homemaker and a member of Cub Creek Baptist Church.
Her
husband, James Mastin Walsh and two stepsons, Ronald Walsh and C. G. Walsh
preceded her in death.
She
is survived by: one daughter, Sandra Nelson and husband, Romey of Murrells
Inlet, SC; three sons, Steve Riddle of Elkton, MD, Nick Riddle and wife, Donna
of Wilkesboro, James M. Walsh, Jr. of Millers Creek; one brother, Britt
Phillips; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and eight great,
great-grandchildren.

Mrs.
Church was born March 23, 1950 in Ashe County to Omar S. and
Marion Cook Poole. She was a waitress at The Carousel and was a member of
Millers Creek Baptist Church.
She
is survived by: her husband, Gale Alan Church of the home; one daughter, Dena
Anne Bauguess and husband, Terry of North Wilkesboro; one
son, Michael Alan Church and wife, Karyn of
Millers Creek; one sister, Sandra Cardwell and husband,
Steve of Millers Creek; three brothers, Michael Poole of Sparta, David Poole
and wife, Janet of Evansville, IN, Keith Poole of Sparta; four grandchildren,

is survived by: three daughters, Betty Huffman and husband, Herman, Nancy

2009 at her home. She was born March 21, 1941 in Baltimore, MD to Vincent and Mary Ross
Brocato. She was a member of Peace Haven Baptist Church. Her husband,
Edward Charles Phillips, her parents, and one sister, Dora Kincaid, preceded
her in death.
Survivors include: four daughters, Betty Jo Cleary of North Wilkesboro, Barbara
Sparr of Kingsville, MD, Brenda Haberman of Euless, TX, Belinda Ruble of
Palmdale, CA; two sisters, Josephine Brady and Mary Dixon, both of Baltimore,
MD; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Mary Jo Stout Lovette, age 63, widow of Johnny "Mack" Lovette, of Baileyton Road, Greenville, Tennessee, formerly of Wilkes County, died at her home.
Mrs. Lovette was born December 24, 1945 in Meadowview, Virginia to John and Nannie
Wilson Stout. She was a member of Peace Haven Baptist Church. Mrs. Lovette was
preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Abigail Stout.
Surviving are a daughter, Jeanine Lovette
Childress and husband Joey of Hays; her mother, Nannie Wilson Stout of
Lenoir; two grandchildren, Kelly Childress, Sierra Childress; four
brothers, Norman Stout, Roger Stout both of Lenoir, D.L. Stout and wife Kay of
Abingdon, Virginia, Johnny Stout Jr. and wife Carol of Lawton, Oklahoma; two
sisters, Edna Stout of Bristol, Tennessee, Barbara Tiller of Knoxville,
Tennessee; several nieces and nephews.
