Two Wilkes teachers receive scholarships Two Wilkes County teachers have received Price-Deverick scholarships for educational improvements in the community. Leslie Settle Barnes, a kindergarten and first grade teacher at Fairplains Elementary and Marian Jean Marley, a chemistry and physical science teacher at Wilkes Central High School, received the scholarships last week. The Wilkes Chamber of Commerce received $800 of the scholarship funds from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation. The scholarship, which honors former Blue Ridge Electric employee Barbara Deverick, was created to benefit teachers. Barnes and Marley will receive $400 each from the scholarship fund.
Traphill Fire Department to hold public meeting The Traphill Volunteer Fire Department will hold a community meeting on Friday, June 2. During the meeting, board of director members will be elected. The meeting is set to start at 7 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.
Yard sale Saturday for Rainbow Center A yard sale to benefit the Rainbow Center Inc. will be held Saturday at the Coffey Building on 9th Street in North Wilkesboro. Anyone wanting to donate yard sale items may call 667-3333 for more information.
Senior celebration at WCC tonight Congraduation 2000, a free concert/celebration for Wilkes County's Class of 2000 high school graduates will be held tonight (Wednesday) from 9 p.m. until to 1 a.m. The event, which will feature music from local bands, will be held at the Watson Stage at Wilkes Community College. Food will be available for various vendors. Seniors, however, will be given coupons for free food and drinks. The event is open to the public. Lowe's safety Saturday is June 10 Saturday, June 10 is designated as Lowe's Safety Saturday. Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse of Wilkesboro will have on-site safety demonstrating Home Safety clinics and many Wilkes County Agencies participating in "Lowe's Safety Fair." List of agencies to appear: Red Cross, Rescue Squad (Wilkes County), Health Department, Smokey the Bear - The Forest Service, McGruff, WCSD Child Safety I.D.'s, "Marks" The Wilkesboro Police K-9, Child Abuse Prevention Team, Face Painting, Humane Society "Adopt A Pet," "Pizza Hut," Kids "How To" Clinics, Food vendors, and many more on-site activities. There are also lots of door prizes and give-a-ways. Don't forget June is National Safety month. Lowe's is partnering with the National Safety Council to celebrate Home Safety week June 10-17. Safety Fair will be Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Auditions June 7 What do women want most? Did Cinderella wear combat boots? Get set for a night of entertainment and drama as the WCC Dinner Theatre presents two tales of medieval comedy. Ever wanted to perform on stage? Then come out for auditions on June 7 at 5 p.m. in the theatre in Thompson Hall, WCC campus.
