Student aces AP test

Susan A. Younger, a 2000 graduate of East Wilkes High School, received a perfect score of 5 on her Advanced Placement Senior English Examination. Her score was also a perfect 5 in last year’s Advanced Placement Junior English Examination. These examinations are administered through he Advanced Placement College Board of New York.

The Advanced Placement courses enable students to pursue college-level studies while still in secondary school. Participating colleges grant credit and appropriate placement to students who have done well on the examinations.

Miss Younger plans to attend Wake Forest University in the fall. Her perfect scores will allow her to place out of freshman English. She is the daughter of Rex and Elaine Younger, who reside in Ronda, N.C.

Harvest Time Competition at Art Gallery

The Wilkes Art Gallery will host the Harvest Time Competition, a juried art show, September 8-30. The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments at the opening reception on Thursday, September 14 between 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m.

The Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club, sponsor of the competition awards, will present the first, second and third place winners with their awards during the reception. Prize-winning artwork will be displayed during the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in North Wilkesboro in October.

The Harvest Time Competition is open to all artists. All forms of media depicting a "harvest theme" will be considered for entry into the show by a committee of jurors. Artwork must be framed and ready to hang. Sculpture, pottery and other three-dimensional work must be clearly labeled and able to stand on its own. Interested artists may call the Wilkes Art Gallery at 667-2841 to request an Entry Form and show details.

According to Dee Vannoy, Executive Director of WAG, "We’re very excited to bring back this popular exhibition and appreciate the support for the arts demonstrated by members of the Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club. It’s our intention to make this a featured, annual exhibition that will coincide with the immensely popular Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. Our upcoming move to the former library building in downtown North Wilkesboro will help spotlight future Harvest Time Competitions making it a major attraction during Apple Festival."

The Wilkes Art Gallery, located at 800 Elizabeth Street in North Wilkesboro, is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, noon-4 p.m. Admission is free.
