By Jerry Lankford From The Editor
There’s a nightmare world in Wilkes County.
Some of us are oblivious. Others have lived it firsthand.
Drug use and addiction have touched many families here. Of all the drugs in Wilkes, cocaine is the worst of the lot.
The use of this drug is costly. A user can lose his job, family, home and even his life. A family can lose a son, daughter, father or mother to a pathetic wretchedness of chemical dependency.
Only one group reaps the benefit of this social scourge -- drug dealers. Money is their sole motivation. There is no humanity involved here. Still society has allowed the drug trade here and elsewhere to flourish. According to Wilkes Sheriff Dane Mastin the illegal drug industry has become almost socially acceptable. Our economy is becoming more and more dependent on these illegitimate business ventures.    A social attitude of zero tolerance may, like Mastin says, be just what we need. Perhaps that’s the only solution. It’s too easy for dealers now. The consequences pale in the green light of profit. But the clock is ticking. How long will it be before Wilkes becomes a Durham, Fayetteville, Greensboro or Charlotte? Answer: As quickly as we allow it to happen. Then, however, it may be too late. |
