N.C. Symphony Pops Concert coming The North Carolina Symphony's annual Holiday Pops concert will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at the Walker Center at Wilkes Community College. Selections include Menotti's "Introduction," "March," and "Shepherd's Dance" from Amahl and the Night Visitors, and "Jubilee" from George Chadwick's Symphonic Sketches. Traditional holiday classics will round out the program. The symphony will also play excerpts from A Chanukah Celebration by Terry Mizesko, who holds the orchestra's Assistant Principal Trombone position. Judy Collins in Wilkes for holiday performance Grammy-nominated recording artist and songwriter Judy Collins will perform at the John A. Walker Center at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8. She will be accompanied by area high school choral students under the direction of Debo Cornett. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for senior citizens and students, and $16 for children 12 and under. Canned food for
amnesty at Library
The Wilkes County Public Library announced that Dec. 4-9 is Amnesty Week for those patrons who have outstanding fines on overdue library books. Overdue books may be brought with canned food which will be donated to the Wilkes Samaritan Kitchen. For each can of food brought to the library, $1 in overdue fines will be cancelled. For $10 in overdue fines, bring in 10 cans of food to clear the account. The Samaritan Kitchen serves 450-550 meals each Saturday at its location in the WWWC building on Wilkesboro Boulevard. CAPT plans 'Day of the Child' activities Dec. 1
December 1 is the Day of the Child. The Child Abuse Prevention Team is planning a Moment of Prayer at noon Dec. 1 at the Wilkes County Courthouse. The official signing of CAPT's contract with North Carolina Safe Kids organization will also take place. Safe Kids is a coalition established to prevent unintentional injuries to children. Give a kid a coat
The Child Abuse Prevention Team will continue the annual coat drive until Dec. 9. Many children in Wilkes County will need coats this winter season. It has been unseasonably warm for the last two months, but winter is coming. If you have a slightly used or outgrown coat and would like to help a child, please take the coat to one of the following locations: Wilkesboro Drive-In Cleaners & Shirt Laundry, The Cleaners & Shirt Laundry, and both locations of Hour Glass Cleaners. These establishments cleaners are generously donating the cleaning of the coats. Coats will be distributed to families in Wilkes County on Dec. 15.
